The Problem With Most Resume Bullets
Most resume bullets describe duties, not achievements. "Responsible for managing social media accounts" tells a recruiter what your job was. "Grew Instagram following from 4,000 to 47,000 in 8 months by implementing a daily short-form video strategy, resulting in a 340% increase in website referral traffic" tells them what you accomplished. Recruiters do not hire duties โ they hire results.
The Formula: Action Verb + What You Did + The Result
Every strong bullet follows this pattern: [Strong action verb] + [specific what] + [measurable result]. "Launched" is stronger than "was responsible for launching." "Reduced customer churn by 22% by redesigning the onboarding flow" is stronger than just "Improved customer retention." If you cannot find a number, use qualitative results: "recognized by VP of Sales as top performer" or "selected to present strategy to C-suite."
Strong Action Verbs by Category
Leadership: Led, Directed, Oversaw, Managed, Mentored, Built. Analysis: Analyzed, Identified, Forecasted, Evaluated, Researched. Creation: Designed, Developed, Built, Launched, Authored. Improvement: Reduced, Increased, Accelerated, Streamlined, Optimized. Sales: Generated, Closed, Negotiated, Grew, Converted. Communication: Presented, Negotiated, Partnered, Advised, Facilitated. Never start a bullet with: "Responsible for," "Worked on," "Helped with," "Assisted in," or "Was involved in."
Before & After: Software Engineer
Before: "Worked on backend API development." After: "Architected and deployed a RESTful API serving 8M daily requests, cutting average response time by 43% and reducing infrastructure costs by $120K annually." Before: "Helped with code reviews." After: "Mentored team of 4 junior engineers through weekly code reviews, reducing production bug rate by 31% over 6 months."
